Makeup Organization 101

I have a pretty decent sized collection of makeup – you can check out all of my makeup and a HomeGoods haul here – and one of my big resolutions was to get organized. So I thought what better way to start my resolution then  to completely clean and organize my collection of makeup! I feel like I have a pretty good way of organizing and I wanted to share some different ways I’ve found to organize my makeup and I wanted to share it with you!

Keep reading for some pictures and ideas of how you can start to organize your makeup collection!

Take Inventory

When I first decided to clean and organize my makeup I had no idea where to start (as you can see I have a whole cart full) so the first thing I did was to take it all out of every container and sort it. I sorted by foundations, concealers, eyeshadow, palettes, tools, brushes, primers, powders, lipsticks and lip glosses, and brow products. I laid them all out in piles so I could really see how much of everything I had and began planning where they would go and what I needed to buy to organize them.

Throw out old/used/never going to wear products

This is so hard for a some-what hoarder like me but so important. Makeup products expire and will make you break out if their too old, so keeping a tidy inventory isn’t just good for keeping you organized but good for your skin, and hygienic! When you have everything laid out or are sorting through things as you’re laying out you need to ask yourself, do I ever use this? How long ago did I get this? Will I really ever wear it? If the answers to those are something like never, too long ago, and no, then toss that bad boy in the trash pile!

Clean your Brushes

After you’ve sorted what you are and aren’t keeping it’s time to clean! And there’s no better way to start fresh than by making sure your brushes are nice and clean. I try to clean my brushes every week but sometimes it ends up being more like two weeks…oops! The simplest and best way I’ve found to clean my brushes is pretty simple-  baby shampoo and hot water! After I clean them I lay them out to dry but if you’re fancy you can get a brush holder like this one.

Get a Variety of Containers

After I cleaned, sorted and threw out my old makeup, it was time to take inventory of what type of containers I had. I opt for clear, lucite containers so I can really see all of my makeup as well as making it have a clean and crisp aesthetic. To hold all of my containers I bought a white, distressed cart from World Market. I find it’s a great way to maintain all of my collection. After I took inventory of my containers from The Container Store and HomeGoods, I took another trip to HomeGoods and found more storage options that I needed for items that I didn’t have before.

Put it all together

After I bought my new containers, I took a look at all the containers I had, figured out what would fit and what I use most, and then organized appropriately. It may take some getting used to if you’re used to just shoving all of your makeup in a drawer but when you have it organized in the first place it is much easier to keep it that way! That’s why it is so important to put what you use most in the most easy-to-reach places and what you don’t use so much somewhere where you may have to reach a little more.

I hope you found these tips helpful! How do you organize your makeup collection? Let me know in the comments!
